Laying the Foundation: Creating a Brand New Lawn from Seed
Creating a beautiful new lawn from scratch offers the opportunity to select the perfect grass seed mix specifically tailored to your garden and needs, rather than using bought turf.
The Process of Laying a Lawn from Seed
Preparation is Key:
Clearing and Deep Digging: We will begin by clearing the area of all existing vegetation, weeds, debris, and any large stones. We will then turn the soil over to about 15 centimetres deep. Ensuring there are no hidden layers of concrete or slabs that could impede drainage.
Soil Improvement: Adding a layer of quality topsoil and mixing in compost or well-rotted manure improves drainage and moisture retention if your soil is of poor quality or too sandy. Incorporating sand can significantly improve drainage for heavy clay soils.
Levelling and Firming: Rake and level the surface thoroughly to create an even seedbed with a fine, crumb-like texture, like the topping on an apple crumble. Firm the soil by walking over it in small, shuffling steps, covering the entire area to remove air pockets and create a solid base.
Settling and Weed Control: Allow the soil to settle for a week or two, then remove any newly germinated weeds before applying a pre-seeding lawn fertiliser to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth.
Selecting the Perfect Seed Mix: This is where the bespoke touch truly shines!
Soil Type: A suitable mix will be recommended based on your Addlestone garden's clay, sandy, or loamy soil. For example, Tall Fescues have deep roots and are good for poor soils.
Sunlight Exposure: A shade-tolerant mix (e.g., featuring Fescues and/or Perennial Ryegrass) is needed for areas with limited sunlight, like north-facing spots or under trees.
Intended Use and Traffic: For family lawns that will experience heavy use, a robust and hard-wearing mix including Perennial Ryegrass and Strong Creeping Red Fescue ensures durability and quick recovery. Varieties like Bentgrass and fine Fescues create a dense and delicate appearance, suitable for a low mowing height, for ornamental lawns.
Maintenance Level: Selecting seeds that match the desired level of maintenance, considering factors like drought tolerance and the need for frequent mowing, can be a key factor.
Sowing the Seed:
Even Distribution: Using a seed spreader or by hand, the seed is evenly applied at the recommended rate (typically 40g - 70g per square meter for a new lawn). Splitting the seed into two batches and spreading it in perpendicular directions ensures even coverage.
Incorporating the Seed: Lightly rake the surface to mix the seed into the top layers of soil, ensuring good seed-to-soil contact for optimal germination. The seeds should not be buried too deeply as they also need light to germinate.
Protecting and watering: A horticultural fleece or bird tape can be used to protect the seed from birds. The newly sown area requires consistent and gentle watering, particularly in the initial weeks. Frequent light watering is preferred over heavy soaking, especially in dry weather, to avoid disturbing the seeds.
Nurturing the New Lawn:
Patience and Initial Care: Germination usually occurs within 7-30 days, depending on the conditions and the seed mix. Refrain from walking on the newly seeded lawn for at least four weeks to allow the roots to establish.
First Mow: Once the grass reaches approximately 7.5cm (3 inches), the first mow can be undertaken with a sharp blade on the highest setting, gradually lowering the height over time.
